PhD Thesis Help UK: Guidance From First Chapter to Viva

Can I get PhD thesis help in the UK? Yes. Send us your subject, the stage you are at and your deadline, and we reply online with a quote. Our help is tutor-style: we explain what examiners test, give feedback on chapters you have drafted and help you prepare for the viva. You write the thesis.

Below you will find what each chapter has to prove, how long a thesis can be, and what happens after you submit, with official sources so you can check every figure yourself.

What does a PhD examiner test, and where do chapters go wrong?

Originality, first. The QAA's doctoral degree characteristics statement says every UK doctorate, whatever its form, has to show an original contribution to knowledge. The full 2020 statement adds that most examiners look for work that is original, adds to knowledge in the subject and is of publishable quality, and that can apply to parts of the thesis rather than the whole. So every chapter has a job in proving that contribution.

The job of each thesis chapter, how it usually goes wrong, and where we help
ChapterThe question it must answerHow it usually goes wrongHow we help (you do the writing)
IntroductionWhat is this research about, and why does it matter?Reads like an abstract. The contribution is never stated plainly. We help you put the contribution in two plain sentences, then check the chapter delivers them. See introduction help.
Literature reviewWhat is already known, and where is the gap?Summarises one author after another instead of arguing a case.We show you how to group sources by argument and spot the gap. See literature review help.
MethodologyWhy is this design the right way to answer the question?Describes what you did without defending the options you rejected. We question each choice the way an examiner will. See methodology help.
FindingsWhat did the data show, before any interpretation?Tables with no stated link to the research questions, or findings mixed with discussion. We explain which test or coding approach fits and how to report it. See statistics help.
DiscussionWhat do the findings mean against the existing literature?Repeats the results instead of interpreting them.We ask the "so what?" questions until your argument is clear, then you rewrite.
ConclusionWhat is the contribution, what are its limits, and what comes next?Adds new material, or claims more than the evidence supports. We check the claims against your evidence. See conclusion help.

Your department may expect a different structure, for example a thesis by publication, so follow your handbook first.

How long can my PhD thesis be, and how long do I have to finish?

It depends on your university, and often on your department. Cambridge publishes a separate limit for each Degree Committee, and says a thesis over the limit may not be examined until it complies, unless you got approval beforehand.

PhD word limits at Cambridge for six Degree Committees, shown against a 100,000-word scale
  • Computer Science and Technology60,000 words
  • Economics60,000 words
  • Biology (80,000 by special permission)60,000 words
  • Engineering65,000 words
  • Education80,000 words
  • Law (100,000 overall cap, with exclusions)80,000 words

Counting rules differ too. Cambridge History sets 80,000 as the maximum and 70,000 as the minimum for a PhD, and its Economics page points out that some of the best theses run to only half the limit. What counts towards the total (footnotes, appendices, tables) varies by committee, so read your own rules in full. The figures above come from the University of Cambridge thesis word limits page, which is one university's rules, not a UK-wide standard.

On time, UKRI's statement of expectations for doctoral training says it models studentship funding on at least 3.5 years full-time. The ESRC's postgraduate funding guide says full-time students must submit no later than one year after their funding end date. Your university sets its own maximum registration period, so confirm it with your graduate school.

What happens after I submit my PhD thesis?

You sit a viva, and most candidates then have corrections to make. Vitae's guide to viva outcomes lists five usual results in the UK, from best to worst:

  1. Outright pass. No corrections needed.
  2. Minor corrections. A few suggestions from the examiners to put right.
  3. Major corrections or resubmission. The thesis needs more work to reach doctoral standard, which might mean more research, rewriting or more literature.
  4. Resubmit, or a lower degree. For example an MPhil, where the research is strong but too narrow for a doctorate.
  5. Outright fail. Vitae says this is for extreme cases such as plagiarism, or where examiners decide the candidate will not be able to complete the doctorate.

Deadlines for corrections are set by each university, so the same outcome can mean very different timetables:

Time allowed for corrections at four UK universities

CambridgeMinor corrections: three monthsMajor corrections: six monthsCambridge viva and corrections

Where we come in: before the viva, we go through your thesis the way an examiner would and practise questions on your own argument. After it, we help you turn the examiners' report into a task list and explain what each comment is asking for. The corrections themselves stay yours.

Quick answers about PhD thesis help

Is this a PhD thesis writing service?

People often search for PhD thesis writing help or a PhD thesis writing service, so I will be direct: we do not write theses for you to submit. We explain, give feedback on your drafts, help you plan the viva and talk through examiners' comments. The writing stays with you.

Can I get help with just one chapter of my PhD thesis?

Yes. Tell us which chapter is the problem and what your supervisor said about it. Many people start with the literature review or methodology, because those are where arguments most often fall apart.

How many words should a PhD thesis be?

There is no single UK figure. Your university or department sets the limit, and even one university can set several. At Cambridge, for example, the limits range from 60,000 to 80,000 words depending on the Degree Committee. Check your own regulations before you plan chapter lengths.

How long does a PhD take in the UK?

UKRI models studentship funding on at least 3.5 years full-time, and the ESRC says full-time students must submit no later than one year after their funding end date. Your university sets its own maximum registration period, so ask your graduate school.

What are the possible outcomes of a PhD viva?

According to Vitae, usually an outright pass, minor corrections, major corrections or resubmission, a resubmission or lower degree such as an MPhil, or, in extreme cases, an outright fail. Most candidates have some corrections to make.

Is a professional doctorate different from a PhD?

The QAA says professional, practice-based and practice-led doctorates were developed for employed professionals and often start with intensive taught modules. Every form of UK doctorate still has to show an original contribution to knowledge. Tell us which route you are on when you ask for a quote.

What should I send to get a quote?

Your subject, your stage, your deadline and a sentence about what is not working. If you have a draft chapter or your supervisor's feedback, mention it. You can use the quote form or WhatsApp, and we reply with a quote.
