How a UK dissertation is usually structured

Most dissertations follow the same core order, even when the topic is technical or creative. The University of Westminster's library guide sets out a standard dissertation structure that runs from title page and abstract through to bibliography and appendices.

Core chapters, typical share of the word count and where help fits
ChapterWhat it doesTypical lengthWhere we can help
IntroductionSets out the context, scope and research question.About 10% of the word countIntroduction help
Literature reviewSynthesises existing work and identifies the gap.Check your handbookLiterature review help
MethodologyDescribes the research design and justifies the methods.Check your handbookMethodology help
Results and discussionPresents the findings, then interprets them and links back to the literature.Check your handbookRequest a quote
ConclusionSummarises the main points without introducing new ideas.5 to 10% of the word countConclusion help

The percentages come from one university's guide. Your own handbook, module leader and supervisor decide the structure and word limits for your course.

What changes between bachelor's, master's and PhD level

UK degrees are placed on a national framework. In the UK Quality Code frameworks document (2014 edition, hosted by Aston University), the levels are:

  • bachelor's degrees with honours: level 6;
  • master's degrees: level 7;
  • doctoral degrees: level 8.

The framework describes progressively more challenging learning at each step. For your project, that usually means markers expect more critical depth and independence as the level rises. Check the exact criteria in your course handbook.

Using support responsibly

Our help is research-based support to improve your own understanding and work. It is not a final version. Follow your university's rules on assistance, referencing and the use of AI tools, and make sure what you submit reflects your own learning.

Questions students ask us

Can someone help me with my dissertation?

Yes. You can get help with a single chapter, the analysis or the whole project. Pick your subject or chapter above, then send your topic, level and deadline for a quote.

Can I get help with just one chapter?

Yes. Many students start with the chapter they are most stuck on, such as the literature review or methodology. The chapter pages above explain what each one covers.

What is the difference between an undergraduate, master's and PhD project?

UK degrees sit on a national framework: bachelor's degrees with honours are at level 6, master's degrees at level 7 and doctoral degrees at level 8. The higher the level, the more critical depth and independence markers expect. Your handbook sets the exact requirements.

How long should each dissertation chapter be?

It depends on your course. One university guide suggests the introduction is about 10% of the word count and the conclusion 5 to 10%. Always follow your own handbook and supervisor.

Is it allowed to use dissertation help?

Rules differ by university. Our work is research-based support to help you learn, structure and develop your own project. It is not a final version, so follow your institution's rules on assistance, referencing and AI tools.
