How early do I need to start my ethics application in Leeds?
Earlier than most students expect. If your project involves people or personal data, ethics approval has to come before you collect anything, and the wait can shape your whole timetable. These are examples from official Leeds pages. Your school or module may differ, so follow your handbook.
| Where | What the university says | What this means for your plan |
|---|---|---|
| University of Leeds: individual applications to a Faculty Research Ethics Committee | Guidance for module leaders says a review of this kind takes about six weeks, and students must not start research with people or personal data before approval. | If your project falls outside your module's block approval, apply well before your planned fieldwork. |
| Leeds University Business School, undergraduate dissertations | Every dissertation needs ethics approval. Students submit at least two weeks before primary data collection. A project that needs full institutional review can take more than two months. The school lists mark deductions of 5 to 15 for missing prior approval or approval evidence, and a 40% cap for proceeding without any approval. | Decide early whether you will collect new data or use existing sources. Projects with the NHS or vulnerable groups take the longest route. |
| Leeds Beckett University | Final-year undergraduate and taught master's projects apply through the Worktribe system. Your supervisor should guide you through the application. | Ask your supervisor which route applies to your project before you design your questionnaire or interview guide. |

Is dissertation help allowed at Leeds universities?
It depends on what the help is, and your own university's rules come first. Support that builds your own understanding is normal. Having someone else produce work you submit is not.
What Leeds universities say. The University of Leeds tells students not to let anyone else complete a piece of work, help with planning and researching, contribute to drafting, or proofread and rewrite their text, and warns that the normal penalty is permanent exclusion. Leeds Trinity's academic misconduct policy treats commissioning a third party, such as an essay mill, a friend or AI, as contract cheating.
What the law says. England's Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022 makes it an offence to provide or advertise, in commercial circumstances, services that complete assignments for students at English higher education providers. The explanatory notes say a student who commissions such work is not liable for the substantive offence, but that does not protect you from your university.
That is why we do not write, rewrite or edit text for you to submit. We explain, give feedback on your own draft, and show you how to improve it. If your university does not allow outside tutoring, use the free support above and ask your supervisor. This is general information, not legal advice.

What do undergraduates, master's students and PhD students usually ask for?
- Undergraduate
- Most questions are about narrowing a broad topic, structuring chapters and understanding what the marking criteria reward. Business students often also need to plan primary or secondary data early because of ethics timing.
- Master's
- Students are expected to justify methods, deal with ethics approval and engage critically with the literature. Common requests are help choosing between qualitative and quantitative designs and working out an analysis plan.
- PhD
- PhD students usually need help with one chapter, a methods section or a literature review rather than a whole thesis. Your supervisor and department set the rules, so tell us your stage and what you have been asked to produce.
