  • Pointers to London archives, libraries and open data
  • Straight talk about where university rules draw the line

What makes a dissertation in London different?

Mostly the number of institutions and the mix of students. London is not one university with one rulebook. Your handbook, your department and your marking criteria decide what a good dissertation looks like, so that is where we start.

  • Almost 50universities and higher education colleges in the London Higher membership
  • About 1 in 3students in the capital come from overseas
  • 70,000+first-year international students arrive to study in London each year

If you are one of those international students, you may be adjusting to UK referencing, critical writing and independent research all at once. That is usually where help with structure, argument and clear academic English makes the biggest difference.

Free help your London university already gives you

Before you pay anyone, use what your university offers. It is free, and the people there know your marking criteria. These are real examples from London universities, and yours will have its own versions.

Study advisers and workshops

LSE LIFE runs master's dissertation talks and workshops on choosing a topic, writing a proposal, developing a research question and planning the project. A recent LSE student blog also mentions a dedicated quantitative study adviser and an academic integrity drop-in.

Library research help

At LSE every department has a designated librarian, and the Library offers one-to-one research consultations on finding literature and data. See the LSE Library teaching and learning support page. Ask your own library if it does the same.

The ethics office

UCL's Institute of Education says student research needs ethics approval before it starts and that students should not collect data without it. Read UCL IOE's guidance for students. Other faculties and universities set their own routes.

London sources and data you can use in your dissertation

Writing in London gives you access to collections and open data that students elsewhere have to travel for. Access rules differ, and some need a pass or advance planning, so check each one before you build your method around it.

Is dissertation help legal in London, and where is the line?

Using support to learn is normal, and London universities offer it themselves. Having someone else produce work you submit as your own is a different thing, and both the law and university policies treat it seriously.

Help that builds your own work

These are the kinds of support London universities run themselves:

  • choosing a topic and shaping a research question;
  • writing a proposal and planning the project;
  • planning ethical, responsible research;
  • anonymising data and protecting participants;
  • structuring chapters and building an argument.

Where universities draw the line

  • King's College London defines contract cheating as buying or commissioning an assessment from a writing service or third party and presenting it as your own.
  • King's also says it includes using a service or third party to edit work in a way that changes its structure or content.
  • King's policy treats generative AI writing programs as third-party technologies, to be used only as College guidance allows.

On the law, England's Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022 makes it an offence to provide or arrange, in commercial circumstances, services that complete assignments for students at English higher education providers, and to advertise such services. The official explanatory notes say a student who commissions such work is not liable for the offence of aiding it. That does not protect you from your university. See the Act's explanatory notes on legislation.gov.uk, King's explanation of plagiarism, collusion and cheating and its Academic Misconduct Policy.

Our guidance and model support is there to help you understand and improve your own work. Follow your handbook on assistance, referencing and AI tools, and submit only work that reflects your own learning. This is general information, not legal advice.

Undergraduate, Master's or PhD: what help usually looks like

Undergraduate dissertation
Often a first independent project. The common problems are narrowing a broad topic, turning it into a question you can answer in the time available, and structuring the argument. Our dissertation methodology help covers the method side.
Master's dissertation
Longer and more demanding on method. You are expected to justify your choices, deal with ethics approval and engage critically with the literature. Our literature review help is a common starting point.
PhD
PhD students often need help with one chapter, a literature review or a methods section rather than a whole thesis. Your supervisor and department set the rules, so tell us your stage and what you have been asked to produce.

What to send us for a quote

The more you can share, the more accurate and useful our reply will be:

  1. your university and department, so we can work from the right handbook;
  2. your topic or draft, even a rough one;
  3. your marking criteria and any supervisor feedback;
  4. your word count and deadline;
  5. what you want from us: planning, structure, analysis, or a check of your own draft.

Prefer to talk it through? Message us on WhatsApp and send the same details there.
