Where should I start if my Birmingham dissertation has stalled?
Short answer: your supervisor first, then your university's own skills service. Both are free and both know your department's marking criteria. Here is what each Birmingham institution publishes about its support, and where each one stops.
| University | What it offers | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| University of Birmingham | An Academic Skills Centre on the first floor of the Main Library, with drop-ins, one-to-one appointments, workshops and online resources. International students can use the Academic English Skills programme, which includes thesis and dissertation writing support. | An Academic Skills advisor's profile lists dissertation writing help for undergraduate and taught postgraduate students, and states that no proofreading service is offered. |
| Birmingham City University | The Centre for Academic Success covers academic writing, dissertations, referencing and statistics, with online one-to-one tutorials over MS Teams or email and group workshops. | BCU Harvard is available in EndNote Online. The library chat can check a small number of references, not a whole bibliography. |
| Aston University | Learning Services offers confidential one-to-one tutorials with Learning Advisors for undergraduates, postgraduates, campus-based and distance learners. | Its guidance says an email tutorial cannot cover a whole dissertation, and the service does not detect AI use or plagiarism in your work. |
| University College Birmingham | Academic librarians offer one-to-one appointments, plus online tools such as the Assignment Life Cycle and recorded workshops. | Its academic skills guidance points out that dissertations, unlike most assignments, need a research question of your own. |
| Birmingham Newman University | Learning Development Tutors, Writing Mentors and study skills workshops through Student Success. | The library maintains one Newman Harvard guide used by all programmes except Law and postgraduate Psychology. |
Details come from each university's own pages, last checked on 3 October 2026. Services change between terms, so confirm on the official pages: University of Birmingham Academic Skills, BCU help and advice, Aston writing and study support, University College Birmingham academic skills and Newman referencing support.
When does outside tutoring make sense for my dissertation?
Short answer: when the free routes cannot cover the gap. That usually means more feedback than a tutorial allows, a method you have never used, or a deadline that is closer than the next available appointment.
What we help you work through
- Narrowing a broad topic into a research question your supervisor can approve.
- Choosing and defending a method, with the reasoning laid out in the methodology chapter guidance.
- Turning a list of summaries into an argument, using the literature review guidance.
- Making sense of your output when the numbers are in, through statistics dissertation guidance.
- Framing the opening and closing chapters with the introduction and conclusion guidance.
- Reading a chapter you wrote and telling you plainly what is thin, unclear or unsupported.
How a typical start looks
- You send the short form below: subject, level, deadline and the part that is blocking you.
- We follow up by WhatsApp or email to confirm what you need and agree the scope.
- You attach your brief or marking criteria, plus any draft you already have.
- We hold online sessions and give written feedback on your own work.
- You revise it yourself and bring the next version back if you want another round.
Looking at other options as well? The dissertation support hub lists every service, and students elsewhere can use our London, Leeds and Manchester pages.
Does my Birmingham university's referencing style change how I write?
Short answer: yes. Many Birmingham universities use Harvard, but each keeps its own version, and your marker checks against that one.
Birmingham Newman publishes a single Harvard guide for nearly all of its programmes, with Law and postgraduate Psychology as the exceptions. BCU offers its own Harvard style inside EndNote Online. Use your department's guide as the final authority. A generic tool such as our free referencing generator is fine for a first pass, but compare the output with your own university's examples before you submit.
Where can I actually work on my dissertation in Birmingham?
- University of Birmingham Main Library: nearly 2,000 study spaces over five floors, open 24/7 during term time, with group study rooms and a Postgraduate Researchers' Suite. Check your access rights first.
- Library of Birmingham, Centenary Square: a public library with study space, free Wi-Fi and computers. At the last check, full service ran 11am to 7pm on Monday and Tuesday and 11am to 5pm Wednesday to Saturday, closed on Sunday. See the official opening hours page before you travel.
- Wolfson Centre for Archival Research: if your dissertation uses original archives, such as local history or heritage, it works by appointment only and needs an Archives Card.
Is it legal to get dissertation help in England?
Short answer: tutoring and feedback on your own work is a normal part of studying. Having someone else complete your assignment is the line, and it is a criminal offence for a business to provide or advertise that.
The Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022 makes it an offence to provide, or arrange, a service of completing all or part of an assignment for a student in commercial circumstances, where the work could not be considered the student's own. Advertising such a service to students is a separate offence. The full wording is on legislation.gov.uk. This is general information, not legal advice. Your university's academic integrity policy applies on top of it.

Questions Birmingham students ask us
Can you help with a dissertation at the University of Birmingham, BCU or Aston?
Yes. The tutoring covers research design, methodology, analysis and feedback on your drafts, whichever Birmingham university you attend. We are independent and not affiliated with any of them, so always follow your own department's handbook and marking criteria.
Do you write dissertations for students?
No. We tutor. You write your own dissertation, and we explain concepts, answer questions and give feedback on what you have written. In England it is a criminal offence to provide or advertise a service that completes assignments on a student's behalf, and we keep well clear of it.
Should I use my university's support service first?
Yes. It is free, and it knows what your department expects. Use it alongside your supervisor. Outside tutoring suits the gaps, such as a limit on how much of a draft a service will read, or a statistics method you have never used.
My deadline is close. What should I do first?
Reread the marking criteria, tell your supervisor where you are, then list what is missing chapter by chapter. When you contact us, say which part is blocking you. We cannot promise a turnaround until we know your brief.
I am an international student in Birmingham. Is there help with academic English?
Universities often run their own. The University of Birmingham's Academic English Skills programme, for example, offers free workshops, including dissertation writing support. We can work alongside that on structure, argument and clarity, always in your own words.
