What Affects the Cost of Academic Writing Help? Level, Length and Deadline

Why does a quote for academic writing help change so much from one project to the next? Because three things set most of it: your academic level, how many words you need and how soon you need them. Change any one of the three and the quote moves. This guide explains why each one matters, what UK universities themselves say about level and size, and what to send so your first quote is accurate.
If you only want your own figure, the OnlineDissertationHelp pricing page has an instant estimate. Read on if you want to understand what sits behind a number before you accept it.
The three things that move the cost, at a glance
| Factor | What it changes | What you can control |
|---|---|---|
| Academic level | The depth of study the work has to match | Tell the provider your exact level and course |
| Word count | How much text has to be researched, written and checked | Confirm the real limit and what it includes |
| Deadline | How much time there is to work in a sensible order | Ask earlier, because the rate steps down as the deadline band gets longer |
How does my academic level change the cost?
Short answer: a higher level means a higher rate, because the work expected at that level goes further. The national framework makes this visible. QAA’s 2024 Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications places a bachelor’s degree with honours at level 6, a master’s degree at level 7 and a doctoral degree at level 8. It describes doctoral study as the creation and interpretation of new knowledge through original research or advanced scholarship, and says doctoral outcomes normally need study equivalent to three full-time calendar years.
Size also grows with level, although every university sets its own figures. Here are real examples from three UK institutions, so you can see the pattern. Your handbook is the only source that counts for your own course.
| Level | Framework level | Example of the size that university sets |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate honours | 6 | A 30-credit dissertation of 8,000 to 10,000 words at Liverpool Hope University |
| Master’s | 7 | A 60-credit dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words at Liverpool Hope. Brunel University London describes its master’s dissertation as usually worth at least 60 credits, at roughly 10,000 to 15,000 words |
| Doctoral | 8 | Between 60,000 and 80,000 words in most subjects at Cambridge, set subject by subject in its PhD word limits list |
This is why PhD briefs are handled differently. At OnlineDissertationHelp the PhD figures are starting points, and each PhD brief is priced individually once it has been read, because no two doctoral projects are the same size or shape. Our PhD thesis help page explains what that support looks like.
Why does word count affect the price so much?
Short answer: every extra word has to be researched, written, referenced and checked. At OnlineDissertationHelp the rate is set per 1,000 words, so for undergraduate and master’s briefs at the same level and deadline, a project twice as long costs twice as much.
To see how much work a dissertation represents, look at credits. QAA’s guide to academic credit explains that one credit is typically about 10 hours of notional learning, which covers everything a student does for a module. On that basis, a 30-credit undergraduate dissertation represents about 300 hours and a 60-credit master’s dissertation about 600 hours. Those totals are our own arithmetic from QAA’s figure, and they include reading, planning and revising as well as writing.
“10,000 words” does not always mean the same amount of text. What counts toward a limit is set by each department. In Cambridge’s list, an Economics PhD limit of 60,000 words includes tables, footnotes, bibliography and appendices, while a Law PhD limit of 80,000 words leaves out footnotes, appendices and the bibliography. Mathematics has no standard limit at all. So before you ask for a quote:
- Find the limit in your module handbook, not in a friend’s message.
- Check whether references, appendices, tables and footnotes count.
- Count what you have already written with our free word counter, so you only ask for the words you still need.
How does the deadline change the quote?
Short answer: the less time there is, the higher the rate, because the same research, drafting and checking has to be squeezed into fewer days. Our rates use four deadline bands: 14 or more days, 7 to 13 days, 3 to 6 days and 24 to 48 hours. The rate steps up at each tighter band, which you can see on the pricing page.
Think of a 5,000-word master’s project. It needs exactly the same reading and analysis whether you ask three weeks ahead or four days ahead. Only the time changes, and the quote reflects that. It also means a small change in date can matter more than you expect: moving from five days to seven takes you out of the 3 to 6 day band and into the 7 to 13 day band.
Missing a deadline can cost far more than a rush rate. In its 2022 guidance, the University of Westminster said coursework handed in within 24 hours of the deadline lost 10 marks (but could not fall below the pass mark), and coursework more than 24 hours late received zero. Rules change every year and differ between universities, so check your current handbook for yours. If you are planning a longer project, our dissertation breakdown tool helps you set stage deadlines early.
What happens to the quote if I change just one thing?
| If you change this | The rate per 1,000 words | The total |
|---|---|---|
| Move from undergraduate to master’s level | Rises | Rises |
| Add another 1,000 words | Stays the same | Rises by one more 1,000-word unit at that rate |
| Move to a shorter deadline band, for example 7 to 13 days down to 3 to 6 days | Rises | Rises |
| Allow more time, for example 5 days up to 7 days | Falls to the longer band’s rate | Falls |
| Ask for only one chapter instead of the whole project | Stays the same | Falls, because there are fewer words |
Can anything else change my quote?
Yes, if your brief is more than a standard word-count task. When a project needs more than the standard rate assumes, the quote reflects it, so it is worth mentioning at the start. A dissertation that includes statistical analysis in specialist software is one example, and our statistics dissertation help page shows what that involves. Telling us early avoids a surprise later.
What should I send to get an accurate quote the first time?
- Your level and subject: undergraduate, master’s or PhD, and the course.
- The real word limit: and what counts toward it.
- The deadline as a date and time: “next week” is hard to place in a band.
- Your brief or marking criteria: if you have them.
- What you have already written: and which part you need help with.
- Anything unusual: data, software or formatting requirements.
The final price is confirmed after your brief has been read, and you pay nothing until you agree to it. If you are sizing a particular kind of project, our pages on research proposal help, coursework help, essay help and research paper help each explain what that project involves.
How can I keep the cost down without lowering the quality?
- Ask earlier. The deadline band is the factor you control most.
- Ask for the part you need. A single chapter such as literature review help or methodology help means fewer words than a full project.
- Know your limit. Our guide to how many words a dissertation needs helps you check you are asking for the right length.
- Use your university’s free support first. Your library and academic skills team can help with planning and feedback before you decide what else you need.
- Compare like with like. A figure only means something when you know the level, word count and deadline behind it, which is why our guide to choosing a writing service starts with the brief.
Common questions about the cost of academic writing help
How much does academic writing help cost in the UK?
Your price is set by your level, word count and deadline. Use the instant estimate on the pricing page to see it for your project. The final figure is confirmed once your brief has been read.
Does a short deadline always cost more?
Here, yes. The rate rises at each tighter deadline band: 14 or more days, 7 to 13 days, 3 to 6 days and 24 to 48 hours. Giving yourself more time is the easiest way to move into a lower band.
Why is a master’s quote higher than an undergraduate one?
Rates rise with level because the work expected rises with it. The national framework puts a master’s degree at level 7 and an honours degree at level 6, and our rate steps up accordingly.
Is every 1,000 words priced the same?
For undergraduate and master’s briefs, yes, at the same level and deadline. The rate per 1,000 words stays fixed within a band, so the total grows with length. PhD figures are starting points, because each PhD brief is priced individually.
Do I pay before I know the final price?
No. The final price is confirmed after your brief has been read, and you pay nothing until you agree to it.
